Antenna placement will account for the rotating windmill assembly, structural loading, and wireless coverage requirements.
The stations will extend StyLink connectivity throughout the Hamish Porcine Centre, supporting residents, agricultural operations, field monitoring, and communications with greater Styville.
Modest Renewable Power
HUMS is designed to accommodate small-scale renewable-energy systems, including solar generation, battery storage, and supplementary wind-generation equipment where appropriate.
These systems can help power communications equipment, monitoring devices, water controls, and selected outbuilding loads.
The water-pumping windmill and electrical-generation equipment will be engineered according to their separate operating requirements.
Designed for the Land
NERD Herd believes that infrastructure should serve its surroundings—not overwhelm them.
HUMS installations will emphasize:
- A traditional agricultural appearance compatible with the Hamish community
- Multiple utility functions within a shared, carefully engineered site
- Reduced need for separate utility structures where practical
- Renewable-energy opportunities and responsible water management
- Serviceable, modular equipment designed for long-term maintenance
- Minimal unnecessary disturbance to agricultural and natural areas

Site selection will consider wind availability, water resources, wireless coverage, soil conditions, environmental requirements, and safe maintenance access.
The objective is not simply to install technology in a rural setting. It is to make that technology genuinely useful to the people and animals who live and work there.
The StyLink and Aero Pig Airport Connection
The HUMS initiative also represents an opportunity to strengthen Styville’s broader communications infrastructure.
NERD Herd’s ongoing engineering work at Aero Pig Airport includes planning for reliable communications, connectivity, and coordination across expanding municipal operations.
Although agricultural communications and aviation systems have different technical and regulatory requirements, they can benefit from coordinated infrastructure planning.
Julia Hock-Smith, P.E., will lead telecommunications engineering coordination for HUMS, working with the StyLink team to evaluate network coverage, equipment placement, structural requirements, and appropriate connections to Styville’s existing communications backbone.
Where practical, the planning will consider future municipal connectivity needs, including the Aero Pig Airport expansion. Aviation-critical systems will remain subject to their own engineering and operational requirements.
Introducing HUMS-01
The initial conceptual installation, HUMS-01, will serve as the proposed reference design for future stations throughout the eastern annexation.
NERD Herd will evaluate the design with Hamish community coordinators William and Beatrice Shankford before determining final configurations and installation locations.
Each subsequent station may be tailored to the agricultural and communications requirements of its particular site.
The objective is a practical, repeatable infrastructure solution that can grow with the community.
Engineering With Purpose
For NERD Herd, innovation is not about making infrastructure more complicated.
It is about making infrastructure more useful.
HUMS brings together traditional agricultural knowledge, modern engineering, and responsible resource management in a system designed to support the future of the Hamish Porcine Centre.
Good land deserves good infrastructure.
And sometimes, progress looks remarkably like an old-fashioned windmill.
